Early Intervention

The Importance of Early Intervention in Childcare

At Skallywags Preschool, we believe every child deserves the best start in life — and that begins with noticing the little things. We’re committed to recognising early signs of change in a child’s development and offering the right support when it’s needed most. One of the most impactful ways we do this is through early intervention: identifying and addressing developmental delays or concerns before they become bigger challenges.

Why Early Childhood Intervention Matters

Early childhood is a crucial time for learning and development. Between birth and age five, children experience rapid growth in communication, social-emotional skills, physical abilities and cognitive development. Identifying and addressing challenges early can lead to:

  • Improved school readiness Children who receive early intervention can better adjust to routines, listen to instructions and engage with group activities.

  • Stronger communication and social skills — With early childhood intervention, some children may show more interest in connecting with others.

  • Greater confidence and independence — Gentle support during the early years can help build a child’s sense of confidence and may help them begin to try tasks on their own and explore new challenges at their own pace.

  • Better long-term educational outcomes — Accessing early intervention support services can help children build positive habits that support ongoing development.

By intervening early, we can support your child’s individual needs and help them reach their full potential.

How We Support Your Child

At Skallywags Preschool, we are proud to have a team of experienced, permanent educators who build strong, trusting relationships with the children in our care. These consistent connections help us closely observe and understand each child’s unique strengths and areas for growth.

When a concern is identified during our early intervention support services, we:

  • Communicate openly with families to share observations and collaborate on next steps.

  • Work alongside external specialists such as:
  1. Occupational Therapists (OTs) to support physical development, sensory needs and daily living skills.
  2. Speech and Language Therapists to enhance communication, speech clarity and language comprehension.

  • Create tailored learning experiences that integrate specialist recommendations into everyday play and routines.
